The Resident Medication Assistant (RMA) is responsible for medications, treatments & residents care duties as assigned by the Resident Care Coordinator (RCC). The RMA acts under the guidance of a licensed Registered Nurse. The RMA is responsible to ensure that the next shift has a responsible & qualified staff member on duty to administer residents’ medications.

Resident Medication Assistant:
  • Administers medication & treatments as assigned within the scope of practice, staying with each resident until the medication is consumed, then charts appropriately.
  • Medication room & carts: Keeps appropriate stock levels & maintain cleanliness.
  • Responsible for locking & storing narcotics (according to protocol) until turned over to pharmacy.
  • Maintains accurate, complete & confidential resident records, according to established procedure & charts any unusual incident or information in resident Progress Notes & in staff Communication Log.
  • Document & immediately report any accidents, incidents and/or signs of resident changes along with giving a brief report to on-coming staff.
  • Takes & records vital signs as ordered by supervisor.
  • Immediately notifies a supervisor if noting any adverse reaction of medication on resident or awareness of medication error as well as any changes in resident physical or mental status.
  • Communicates, as needed, with physicians, families & other appropriate parties concerning resident status, changes in status, need for appointment, etc.
  • Knowledge of proper transfer techniques & body mechanics to transfer residents with appropriate assistance (gait belt, transfer board, Hoyer Lift, Camel).
  • Order new & routine medications as ordered by physician.
  • Daily internal contacts with RCC, RN, Med Aide & Executive Director.
  • Responsible for attending to all care needs of the residents in their assigned sections, either scheduled or as they arise following resident Service Plan. Check each resident at least every meal hour.
  • Assist with serving during mealtime and clean up. Bring residents into the dining room & taking orders. Dispense medications at this time also.
  • Verbally cue residents requiring assistance.
  • Pick up laundry from resident apartments; rinse out soiled laundry & dispose of dirty laundry in appropriate laundry barrel.
  • Collect garbage from assigned resident apartments daily. Immediately remove incontinent supplies that are wet or soiled.
  • Immediately report any family concerns to the RCC, RN or the Executive Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Age 18 years or older.
  • Enjoys working with the elderly.
  • Must deal with the public, visitors & residents in a tactful, graceful & caring manner.
  • Completed First Aid & CPR training.
  • Frequent lifting requirement of less than or equal to 50 pounds, occasional lifting requirement of greater than or equal to 50 pounds.
  • May be additional qualifications to meet state regulations.
  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Six (6) months on-the-job experience as a Caregiver for seniors. Proven excellence in Caregiver role. Prior supervisory experience helpful.
